The journey of Step Tire started in 2013 when Ian and Wayne Hill went on a mission trip to a tiny African village. The goal of their trip was to help the small medical clinic in the village get bathroom facilities using collected rainwater, proper septic system and purified running water. In addition, they helped construct a large solar array to power everything. The solar panels provide a large shaded area for those waiting for medical care at the small clinic. While working there they saw kids and adults walking, running, working and playing without any shoes on their feet, an idea took root! Never did they expect that such a small village in the middle of Uganda could have such a huge impact on their lives.
Over time they realized that the challenges the people in that small village faced are the same challenges that millions of others face all over our planet. Although they were inspired by the experience in Uganda the goal continued to evolve into creating a solution that could be leveraged in almost any place on earth.
The desire to help these people eventually transitioned into building a manufacturing process and designing the product line with the team at REMBIR. The result is a new kind of footwear called Step Tire.
The Key Initiatives of Step Tire is to:
Lead a mission to create jobs and hope in the USA and all over the world
Be conscious of the environment we share
Create comfortable, appealing and long lasting footwear
How does Step Tire do this?
Step Tire shoes are built with a combination of high quality globally sourced materials and local components and labor at our microfactories. Step Tire products that are purchased in the USA are Made in Dallas, Texas pulling used tires from the North Texas Solid waste stream. On each pair of shoes, we manufacture you will find a small metal tag with a right side foot and a unique serial number on it. When you register your new Step Tire shoes we will send you a photo of the left foot tag with the matching serial number and the components for another pair of shoes headed to one of our microfactory partners.
Simply put when you purchase a pair of Step Tire shoes you help us give materials to make another pair of shoes at one of our microfactories around the world. Step Tire’s goal is to put microfactories in places where there is a lack of opportunity for people that live there. Places like the small village in Uganda. The formula is Opportunity + Support = Hope. We believe that Hope is something that everybody wants but unfortunately many don’t have. We intentionally chose a waste material (used tires) that is readily available in every part of the world and convert it into a product (shoes) that everyone needs, rich or poor. Reusing old tires not only helps clean up our planet, but it also makes our shoes last much longer than the traditional materials an increasing the benefit. In addition, the microfactory creates employment for the local people to collect old tires and process them into a pair of shoes. More opportunities are then created for sales and distribution to shops in the region. Our plan is to teach as many as possible how to support themselves and the communities they serve. Through the manufacturing and distribution process, the value of the materials given to the microfactory is often multiplied many times over increasing the benefit to the microfactory and the people that work there. Our mission is to bring people together that hope as we do for a better tomorrow for people and our planet one Step Tire at a time.
